QUESTION:
How would someone deal with concept of being a clone and being extremely different from other people in society? Does a clone deserve the same respect as everyone else?
RESPONSE:
In the book "The House of the Scorpion", Matteo Alacran was born, well, harvested, as a clone. He is a clone of the richest man in Opium: El Patron. Matt grew up with one of the housekeepers that worked in the Alacran estate. He was loved and she treated him like her own son, but he was oblivious of the fact that he was different from everyone else and that he was a clone. Then, he is exposed to the rich children of the Alacran estate, and because of an injury, they bring Matt to the Alacran estate to get some help. However, upon the discovery of the mark of his foot "Property of the Alacran Estate", everyone who was trying to help Matt realizes that he is not one of them. He is not allowed to return to his faithful guardian, but is forced to live in the Estate where everyone treats him like an animal. But when El Patron discovers how they have been treating his clone, he is outraged, and demands that they treat him like a normal boy. Matt is given privileges like the normal children of the Estate. But to his dismay, everyone turns up their noses and treats him terribly when El Patron is not around. Matt is forced to live his childhood as a burden to the Alacran estate. But what makes Matt so different from everyone else?
I think that Matt should be treated just as well as everyone else. First of all, Matt being born a clone was definitely not Matt's fault. He cannot help being born from a cow and having the exact same DNA as someone else. He is just hoping that others will accept him as a member of society even though they know what he really is. In this book, very few people see Matt as a normal person. When he leaves Opium, he conceals his identity hoping that if no one knew he was a clone, they would treat him like a normal person. Secondly, Matt should be treated like everyone else in society because he is really just another human being. Matt, like everyone else, has a brain, which proves that unlike animals he is able to think just like anyone else. Matt also has his own set of talents. He is gifted in music and has even surpassed the abilities of his teacher. Lastly, Matt has a heart. He is so open to love others, most of the time, and has battles between good and evil, also demonstrating that he has a soul. Because Matt is so open to love others, shouldn't he be able to receive love from others, and not just from the few that see beyond his difference?
In conclusion, Matt should really be treated like everyone else, because deep down, other than a few differences, he really is just like everyone else. The fact that he is a clone is definitely not his fault, and he is so open to love others, except for the ones that hurt him, that it seems so unfair that no one really wants to love him back. If I were in Matt's position I would have a lot of trouble dealing with being a clone because I would not have any respect from oters and ultimitely I would not even have self-respect. This is the reason that we should treat others just as well as we would like to be treated, becaus if we all did that, the world would be a much better place!
