My Question:

Why does Elie Wiesel never show his sentimentality?

My Response:

The first 14 pages of this story are enough to say that this book is about a very deep and sincere subject. The burning of the house and the screams of the people being separated from their families is so much to go through at a young age of 13. Usually at that age we are more emotional and start to feel things we haven't before. This book is showing exactly that and how this 13 year old deals with his pain and suffering.

Elie sees things differently then others do. If you try imagining what life would be like if you witnessed your family burned to death, you would be overwhelmed with sorrow. That is what happened to Elie, but he didn't cry. Elie seems to be the kind of person that just has to keep something else on his mind rather then focusing on the things he has lost. I feel as though Elie was hurt so bad inside that he just couldn't take it, and had to just let it all out, but he didn't. Instead he tried to keep the one thing left of his family alive: his father.

Elie's goal was to just keep pursuing his freedom and trying to keep his father alive. I think he feels as though he must forgive and forget because there is nothing he can do about it, for example, in the first scene where the Nazis burned down his house and took his sister and mother away. He did not flinch but just took the time to think for himself. He thought it over; should I cry? Instead, he thought that he should focus on where he is going and try to do as much as he can to save the lives of others. I believe that he is a true hero because in the concentration camp he continued on his march to freedom. Elie Wiesel is a character that will never be forgotten because of his bravery. All around, this was an amazing book and should be read with sympathy for the boy would not show his sadness.
