INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

International Women's Day: A GLOBAL DAY OF CELEBRATION - Celebrated on

8 March, International Women's Day (IWD) is the global day connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. IWD celebrates the collective power of women past, present and future ...

Every year, 8 March is celebrated around the world as International Women's Day. Cyber School Bus have planned a program of information and fun for the classroom to celebrate International Women's Day with a focus on women, peace and politics.

The Penturn Library has prepared a display of books about important Canadian Women and a webliography of links to interesting IWD sites around the globe. IWD is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate women’s achievement and share our different traditions. Come and pick up your copy today.

The first IW D was held on 19 March 1911 . About a million women and men participated in Denmark , Germany , Austria and Switzerland . This date was chosen by German women to commemorate the day in 1848 when the Prussian king promised women the vote. The use of the date March 8 has continued since 1918. It is the anniversary of an IWD demonstration for "bread and peace" by Russian women in St Petersburg in 1917.

In Canada this year the theme is PEACE >> Not in Our Name, Not with Our Money: Women's peace initiative on the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8 >>

It was agreed to begin this international initiative at the international meeting Let Us Globalize Feminism and Anti-militarism that was organized in Belgrade on December 26th-28th, 2003 by Women in Black.
