Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden

Question :

Most of us feel safe and comfortable with our lives, but what would we do and how would we feel if everything that made us feel safe was gone ?

Response:

          In this world there is a lot that makes me comfortable and makes me feel safe. There is my parents, the rest of my whole family, my pets, my friends and so much more. With all this gone, I don't know what I would do. I would be terribly frightened, sad, miserable and I would feel very alone. I wouldn't know what to do at all, and if I did, I wouldn't know how I was going to do it or if it was a good idea. I would feel all sorts of dreading emotions and at last I actually think that I would give up. If everything that made me feel safe had been taken away from me because of an invasion, like in the novel Tomorrow When the War Began, I think the action I would take would be to fight and risk anything to try and get it back. After all, it's the most important and biggest part of your life. I feel that it's the most important part of your life because I can't imagine my life waking up and not feeling safe in my own home, but it happens. If I did not feel safe, I would consider my life horrible.

         The good thing is that in this novel, although everything that ever made them feel safe was gone, they had one thing that did help them a lot. They had their friends which helped themsleves through this scary time. If they were alone without their friends they would probably be hopeless. There was one thing that gave them hope, and that was eachother. They would always try to stick together and strategize on what to do next. If something happened to one of them, they would always have all their friends to take care of them and cure them so that they could carry on in the battle.

          By answering this question, it really shows me the most important and valued things in life. It shows me that, although at this age a lot of teenagers and average adults are all interested in material things, but we all know that we would give up everything just to feel safe again and to be with the ones we love the most. It also shows me how much people need other people to survive, and the great effect that it has on them. I realized the motivation that human beings can give to and recieve from each other without even realizing it. Also, when humans are in danger or feel very unsafe and are afraid, they need someone to be there with them, just to have that level of security. It all goes to show that without eachother we may give up very easily, but if we have another person with us that can help us believe and get through all the risks and dangers, we know that we are not alone, we are a team and we are together.
